Big Four firm PwC announced that it will allow approximately 40,000 U.S. employees the ability to work remotely from anywhere in the continental U.S. moving forward.
The firm said the move will allow staff members “to respond to what their needs are in this changing work environment, to continue to put flexibility and well-being benefits at the center, and expand the pool of people we attract and recruit to achieve our aggressive hiring goals and our DEI aspirations,” per a statement. With 55,000 U.S. employees, the move would allow most to work virtually.
The new policy will impact professionals across client services, including consultants, auditors and tax professionals. The firm claims the move is the first among professional services firms to offer a permanent work-from-anywhere policy moving forward.
“We have learned a ton through the pandemic, and working virtually, as we think about the evolution of flexibility, is a natural next step,” said Yolanda Seals-Coffield, deputy people leader at PwC, in a statement. “If you are an employee in good standing, are in client services, and want to work virtually, you can, full stop.”
According to the firm, professionals will have two weeks to alert their managers if they intend to subscribe to the work-from-anywhere model. Professionals will be able to modify their remote work situations to meet different needs as time goes on.
Pay will also be determined by geographic location, as those working from a “lower cost location will see their pay decrease,” Seals-Coffield told Reuters. Partners whose team members will be in the office regularly will also not be allowed to totally work remotely.
